Vinibuoni D’Italia is one of the wine worlds most unique guides.
With it’s prime focus on the wines produced from the vast selection of Italy’s native wine grapes, it goes without saying that this is an annual publication close to our native hearts.
Sharing such an interest, we were stoked to have been invited to participate in the 3 Days of intensive tasting at Buttrio’s ‘Villa Topo Florio’, to determine who’d be crowned with the guides supreme award – THE 2018 CORONA.
So who was in the mix?
Well, all those wines who’ve already been awarded Vinibuoni’s coveted GOLDEN STAR. For the 2018 Guide, more than 26,000 wines were tasted by the 21 regional tasting panels, from which they selected the best 672 STARS….. royals in waiting, if you like.
In the final CORONA tasting, the objective is effectively to select the ‘BEST of the BEST’.
Infact, this ultimate tasting concept is a pretty cool one as it’s TOTALLY BLIND and brings together both wine professionals and wine lovers alike. It’s a level playing field where every opinion counts, equally. If the wine moves you, it’s thumbs up. For those GOLDEN STARS that don’t graduate, well the throne room will just have to wait for another vintage.
In a recent move, the guide now also includes two much merited special sections, one on Italy’s Sparkling Wines and the other on Istria, which includes parts of neighbouring Slovenia & Croatia. Spreading the love across styles and borders… yeah, we like it.
What’s more, for the Consumer to become KING for 3 Days is what we see as a refreshing celebration of all that’s good in the world of wine and winemaker appreciation.
Too often the Pro’s ignore the Con’s, right!
There are messages here for all guides…..not least this….’tasting blind absolutely concentrates the mind’.
The minions amongst us happily salute all the KINGS & QUEENS of Vinibuoni D’Italia 2018 …. ALL 414 !
So why not consider this news as being a little like
‘THE WIND BEFORE THE TRAIN!’
With a shout out to Marvin Powell :)
